Brace yourselves…. It’s summer blockbuster time. Here are some of the releases slated for May 2015:
Ex Machina (April 24)
I realize that this is technically an “April release” – but I am just so impressed with this intelligent and thrilling film. It’s one of the best films I’ve seen this year (so far). Domhnall Gleeson plays Caleb, a young programmer who is selected to participate in a breakthrough experiment in artificial intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breathtaking female A.I (Alicia Vikander). I can’t seem to say it enough – Go see this film!
Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1)
It wouldn’t be summer without a huge superhero spectacle! The Avengers are back… and this time when Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and it is up to the Avengers to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans. This one’s the biggie – with a returning A-list cast, including Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, a bunch of explosions, wise cracks, amazing visuals, and with Joss Whedon at the helm, a lot of heart. This is one of, if not, THE MOST anticipated flick of the summer. Avengers, Assemble.
Hot Pursuit (May 8)
I feel like we’ve seen this movie about 100 times. In this version, Reese Witherspoon is the “inept police officer” who must protect the widow of a drug dealer (Sophia Vergara) from criminals and dirty policemen. Girl power and all that…I guess….I’m sure I’ll catch it on t.v. every weekend in about a year…
Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15)
In a post-apocalyptic world, in which people fight to the death, Max teams up with a mysterious woman, Furiousa, to try and survive. George Miller, director of the original Mad Max series is back for this highly stylized, violent, gas guzzling flick featuring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult.
Pitch Perfect 2 (May 15)
The Pitches are back! Anna Kendrick and crew are back for another installment of the aca-amazing Pitch Perfect. The stakes are higher as the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has never won in order to regain their status and right to perform. Pitch Perfect was a hilarious and entertaining surprise – here’s hoping that these Pitches bring it!
Tomorrowland (May 22)
Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory. This project has so much mystery surrounding it – and I seriously have not idea what to expect! Can’t WAIT!
Spy (May 22)
A desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster. It’s not a new idea – but I’m hoping for a few good laughs from Melissa McCarthy!
May releases also include period drama Far From The Maddening Crowd (May 1) featuring the delightful Carey Mulligan, natural disaster flick San Andreas (May 29) with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and another installment of horror flick Insidious: Chapter 3 (May 29). Not a bad start to the summer blockbuster season!
