The 2014 Emmys: Recap

I’m a little late on this – but the 2014 Emmys went off without a hitch.

While there were some expected winners, with Breaking Bad reeling in the top dramatic acting awards, and some groan worthy repeats (Modern Family…again?!) – there were no fireworks, no big surprises – but it was still an entertaining and well executed show, thanks in large part to our host, Seth Meyers.

Seth Meyers said it himself, he isn’t the most versatile performer, no singing, acting or dancing (at least not by him) – but at least we had one-liners and topical jokes – nothing fancy – but that’s something that I appreciate about Meyers (and is evident from his time on SNL and his late night talk show) – he’s good-natured, clever and efficient enough to have an overbloated awards show end on time.

It seems that the Academy is still afraid of shows and platforms that are different. It irks me to no end that the Big Bang Theory (or any Chuck Lorre programs) get so much love at these awards shows – especially when there’s so much great comedy on television.  Netflix shows Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards (which were heavily favored across acting categories), went home empty handed, while, the very deserving cast of Breaking Bad shut out McConaughey and Co’s True Detective (not that I mind – I would have been happy with either winning in the acting categories).

The audience was a source of entertainment in itself, with Matthew McConaughey roasts, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston rekindling some soap opera melodrama, and some hilarious impromptu fillers like anything Amy Poehler, some riffing with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (they even brought up the plagiarism fiasco!), Billy on the Street, the audience Q&A and a Weird Al/Andy Samberg musical mashup.
